Excellent fit(07/07/2009)
This was very easy to install. It is a great addition to my Colt. The best part is that I did not have to alter the frame.
Good product(14/03/2010)
Only minor fitting required, didn't have to alter frame.
Almost a Drop In(28/07/2010)
Bought the Wilson because I didn't want to modify the frame. Upon receiving the GS I noticed that for a drop in, the finish was very good and would match the stainless frame of my Colt Series 70 Combat Commander very well. I have read some reviews that stated the GS fit perfectly with no fitting, well that was not the case with my Colt. It took about 30 minutes of fileing and fitting before I got the fit. The lower body of the GS fit the frame very well, with little lateral play, the only gap was at the frame spurs and the GS. It really isn't that bad for a drop in though! IF you are handy at fitting parts you should have no problem, but if you aren't you could easily ruin the GS by fileing too much. I think to make it fit correctly you must know how the GS works in relation to the trigger and frame, so before attempting to install the GS read and get some idea of how it is supposed to fit and operate. Go slowly, and do the safety tests after completion.
Nice product from Wilson Combat!(20/08/2010)
This was the first drop in grip safety I have purchased. I bought it for my Colt Defender and it only tok minimal fitting and once it was in it looks and works great!!
Drop-in...Not so much(12/11/2010)
WHile this is obviously a well made part I would not call it drop-in. In my 70S Commander it required what I would describe as extensive fitting. I had to file and polish virtually every surface that made contact with the frame. About the only place that didn't require fitting was the actual tang that contacts the trigger. I marked "would not recommend to a friend". One exception to that would be a friend with the skills to fit it.
"I would recommend it to anyone"(10/01/2011)
I ordered it for a freind who wanted to put it on a series 70 colt combat comander that his dad carried while hewas the sheriff of Putnam County, IN. It fit perfect, the only fitting required was onthe arm that contacts the trigger bow. I would recommend it for anyone.
Pivot Hole Seems To Be Crooked(28/01/2011)
I did the headline above "Pivot Hole Seems To Be Crooked" because that was the effect on the installation, and although I cannot prove it beyond any doubt that I am correct then either the hole is drilled crooked in the grip safety or the hole in the LW Commander frame is not drilled true to the frame. I say this because the thumb safety when installed without the Grip Safety installs correctly in the frame. The "Bind" comes in when you attempt to install the new Beaver Tail safety.
Many hours of slow file work on the middle left side of the Safety now allows the safety the freedom of movement with no frame binding or hang ups.
I will purchase a second safety to see what happens.
Either way I will report my findings.
NOT A DROP-IN PART(07/05/2011)
THIS IS NOT A DROP-IN PART. I HAVE SIX OTHER GRIP SAFTIES AND THEY ALL FIT, DIFFERENT MAKES. THIS ONE DOESN'T FIT, NO MATTER WHAT I DO. WILSON HAS HIT A FOUL BALL HERE.
change previous review(12/05/2011)
After watching a youtube video I saw why mine was so hard to fit. Mine did not have the sheet showing what metal to remove to make it fit. Once I saw the video - it was a snap. Not my fault the instructions weren't there - but the youtube video was a huge help and the product is fine.
Looks Good, Feels Great(30/05/2011)
It only took minor fitting to install this piece in my RIA 1911MS, but that was no problem as I like doing that kinda stuff. This Beavertail looks great and feels even better. I ordered the stainless and I think the contrast of stainless over black parkerizing looks stunning.
Great part but not a drop-in.(20/06/2011)
This part did exactly what I wanted it to do. It blends to the frame as well as the factory grip safety and was an easy fit. I did have to thin down one side with a file before bead blasting. Fitting the engagement tab was easy. If you are mechanically inclined this piece is great. I would call it an easy fit rather than a drop-in.
Beavertail Safety used on Colt Officer(21/06/2011)
This safety was basically a drop in piece. It took very minor fitting to get it to function and fit properly. It is a great piece and looks awsome.
Good Replacement(07/12/2011)
Did not want to cut the tangs of the frame, so replaced duckbill on my Colt Commander with this drop-in. Filing the tab that blocks the trigger bow is needed. Much tighter fit, especially with the addition of the WC thumb safety, than what the duckbill grip safety had.
Remember, this is a drop-in and there will be a gap between the MSH and the bottom of the grip safety, but the tabs still engage the top of the MSH.
excellent product(02/02/2012)
this is by far the nicest drop in beavertail i have ever seen.no unsightly gaps excellent fit and finish.i normally use the fitted units but i wanted this for a vintage pre 70 series commander and didnt want to modify the frame.i would use one again and plann to on any gun that i dont want to disturb the original finish.cant go wrong with wilson
Wilson Combat s/s drop-in safety(05/10/2012)
Adds to the value of a 1911. Looks nice. Fitting is required. A medium sized file and fine sandpaper are handy for fitting (only takes about 30 minutes).
Kimber II issues(10/04/2015)
This grip safety does not work with type II Kimber pistols.
I am kind of ham fisted and have trouble fully engaging the stock grip safety consistently. I have a Pro Crimson Carry II. Kimber makes a grip safety with a memory bump, but they are and have been out of supply for a long time which is why I searched elsewhere. Found this one as a drop in and since I didn't want to grind the frame figured I would try it. BTW, everything I have purchased from Wilson Combat has been top shelf - great components. Also, super pleased with Brownells.
So, the type II Kimber's have a "Schwartz safety" for the firing pin. Basically, a thin rod or lever with a slotted hole held by the same pin as the sear/disconnector moves up through the frame and pushes a button inside the slide to allow the firing pin to move forward. This grip safety can not contact that level so the gun will not fire. I didn't figure this out until after I fitted it to the trigger stirrup for proper operation and took it to the range to test fire.
The purpose of this review is in the hope that others do not make the same mistake. Again, very happy with the folks at Brownells and Wilson Combat too.
All grip safeties require fitting!!(21/05/2016)
Let's face it all 1911 grip safeties require fitting as it engages the trigger bow and the frame.
During my Colt 1911 Armorer's course we even practiced fitting a factory grip safety on a GI model as part of the course.
Let's face facts it was made to fit Colt Government or Commander models. If you have another manufacturer either live with fact that there is huge gap at the frame junction or put on your big boy pants buy an appropriate fitting jig and spend the 1-2 hours it takes to do a custom fit that look so much better anyways.
Excellent part!(20/02/2010)
I purchased this drop-in part for my Colt M1991A1 compact (same diminsions as officer)as an upgrade in the beavertail department and I am most pleased with this piece as I am with anything I have ever gotten made by Wilson Combat.I did have to slightly grind and file the shelf that rides on the trigger bar because it was a little long but it was no big deal.I would almost say that Wilson makes them a hair longer than the stock part so it will fit any commander/officer in the end.Better too long than short! The rest of the part did drop-in perfectly with zero gaps with a very clean professional look.Hey folks it's a Wilson Combat part and I highly recommend this piece,it's true quality.
fantastic piece of great work,(21/11/2010)
easy as 1/2/3 a little trim on trigger connector and it was perfect.definately a great buy
Won't fit P-13(07/02/2011)
Ordered this for a Commander size Para P-13. Don't do that. Not even close. Get the Para safety and the Wilson jig and the nerve to put a grinder to your frame.
Per my review of the gov't drop in unit, I'm sure this would be the ticket for any true Commander frame. As in AMERICAN.
even I could do it(02/03/2011)
I bought this for my Colt Combat Commander. the listing says minor gunsmithing may be required. half hour with a file, and an hours total time and it fits like a glove.
I would buy another one in a heartbeat if I had another Colt .45acp
No Problems(27/01/2012)
Fairly easy installation on an officer frame Colt New Agent. Does require fitting, but that is understandable with such a part. Some patience and a file are all that is really required. Finish is ever so slightly lighter than the black of the aluminum frame. Frame gaps are fair, about what to be expected from a drop-in type part.
Don't think Just buy it..(28/05/2012)
This part is perfectly fitting to my Colt Combat Commander, no need any operation you just replace it. This grip safety gives a nice apperiance to gun so I absolutely advice it.
Easy install on New Agent(17/06/2012)
I installed this with only minor filing on my 9mm New Agent. A great quality part and so far flawless function. Would have been 5 stars if was a true "drop-in" safety. Still, only minor filing and now my New Agent is as comfy as my full-size 1911's.
Excellent fit for Colt Commander(22/07/2012)
I bought a new Colt Commander Model#04691 and this part fit and had a matched finish as if it come from the factory made just for it. Yes you must do some light file work, LIGHT file work where the tab engages the trigger bow but the frame contours fit this part wonderfully. If you have another model of 1911, check online for fit information but I can attest that you will be happy with the semi-custom look this will give a Colt Commander. Thanks to Wilson Combat for a great product.
Outstanding fit !!!(04/08/2012)
I purchased this grip safety for my Colt New Agent. I had previously been running a Wilson semi drop in 429BG model and even with 400 rounds through the pistol with zero problems, I was not happy with the gap between the frame horn and the grip safety. Yes it was better than the standard GI style GS Colt gives you, but the gap bothered me. I could not decide between the factory duck bill, this 429BC, or an Ed Brown. I have two Ed Browns on my Dan Wesson 1911s, but I prefer the memory bump on the Wilson Combat.
So, after doing alot of research and knowing going into it that I might have to do some filing, I went ahead and ordered this grip safety. After 10 minutes of tear down and re-assembly I was absolutely blown away. Perfect fit, zero filing needed and perfect function test. Given, there is a slight bevel to the frame that does not give that "custom blended gap" appearance, but the massive gap that used to be there is now gone. I compared both my old 429BG to this new 429BC and I could not tell a difference between the two sear engagement points, nor the overall length. Very impressive WC. I had read others that said they needed to slightly file this area on the GS, but I guess I just got lucky. As a point of refernce, my Colt New Agent is a 2011 model Talo edition .45 ACP 1 of 500 made, that is stock besides the grips, grip screws, this grip safety and a Wilson Combat extended slide stop. The gun is now perfect and will continue to be my daily carry.
I would highly recommend this grip safety for anyone with a Colt New Agent looking for a beaver tail grip safety. Thanks Brownells for the best price anywhere and the quick shipment.
429BC mounted on Colt Comander 38S(12/02/2013)
I know this states drop in, but this is not accurate. I still had to modify the frame just a tad. not a huge issue, but fitting to the trigger bow was much tougher than explained. I am ordering another one, as I took too much material off the first one. I am a newbee and I expected to make mistakes. not blaming anybody but me. Rookie gunsmiths.. one pass with the file per trial. this is a slow process. I did a trigger job, new hammer springs everything. the beavertail was the toughest for me and is still not right yet.
Works Just Fine(16/04/2013)
Bought it for my Colt LW Commander. Installed without too much trouble. Works great. However, you will need to fit it. The piece that blocks the trigger must be filed to do its intended job. If you're not familiar with exactly how your 1911 functions you may have difficulty. YouTube has some excellent videos on this procedure.
Hungry 45!!!(20/08/2013)
The end of a hammer bite and the cheap beavertail who arms my hand!!!!! I've drop de 429BC Commander Safety grip on my Norinco 1911 A1 45ACP with the Wilson Combat Commander Hammer and it's a dream!!!! Best Grip, Better hand position and the most important, NO HAMMER BITE!!! Very a good buying!!! No Fitting.........
Worked for me!(18/11/2013)
Bought this for my Springfield Armory MilSpec. I saw pictures of the government style drop-in on other MilSpecs and did not like the big gaps. Heard that someone had used the commander style so I thout I would try it. Would not drop in, but going on the file the cheaper part adage I was able to modify it to work. Had to remove about 1/16" where it was contacting the tangs. Once it fit, a little cold blue and I am very happy with the results.
Para GI Expert(13/03/2014)
Ordered this one for my Para GI Expert by mistake. Glad I did. The 429BC is actually for commander models while the 429BG is for the full size government models. Instead of returning it, I did some slight modifications with a small hand file, and it fits great. It actually results in a much better fit than that of the 429BG. The BG drops in without mods, but leaves a wide ugly gap between the tang and the beavertail. A small modification of the BC results in a much better fitting.
not even close to being a drop in(09/05/2014)
I have built several 1911 pistols and have been working on them for the past 40 years,I have installed more Grip safetys then I can remember, but tnis one takes the cake.I have had to do more grinding, fileing and polishing on this safety then ever before.it was so oversized that it would not even fit into the slot in the frame.that said, after several hours of hard work,it fits and works and looks great.I must just got a factory misfit, because I have never had a problem with any part that I ordered from Brownells before.
So easy even I could do it.(19/11/2015)
This product was simple to install on a Series 80 Colt lightweight enhanced Commander. Some filing was required but the piece was fitted and installed within 45 minutes.
I familiar with 1911's but am by no means a gunsmith/machinist. No instructions included but one YouTube video later and I am pleased with the installation.
Fit around the frame looks good for no frame modifications being needed, which is the point of a drop in.
Not a drop in (20/05/2016)
I really liked the shape and quality of finish. I installed on a Colt Commander but it did need the trigger bar fitted. Altho not very much needed to be removed. I would caution anyone installing one to take very light cuts and try the fit there is a short distance between go and too much,
Not a quality part or fit(29/07/2016)
Huge gap at top between frame and safety. Totally unacceptable for what is supposed to be a "drop in fit" for the new enhanced 1911 Colt frame.
Do not waste your time and money on this poor knockoff, order a genuine Colt part instead.
Not a Drop-In Part(24/01/2017)
Although the end result was pleasing given that this is not a custom fitted/frame cut and blended part, dropped 2 stars for the false description. Drop-In this is definitely not. I am a Colt-trained armorer and this is not my first grip safety. Used a brand-new Colt 1991 Government Series 80, which you would rightfully believe to be the blueprinted standard of 1911s. While I expected to fit the safety nose to the trigger, the entire part gave me fits and needed filing, stoning, and rebluing in several areas in order to move freely with the thumb safety installed. Easily 2+ hours of work. The fit of the beavertail to frame tangs was the best aspect of the part - no issues there. The rest of it was a horror. Would have been 4 stars if I had been expecting the amount of work involved.
Pleasently Surprised!(25/01/2017)
Well done Bill Wilson! I thought for sure I would need to do at least SOME fitting on a "Drop-In" 1911 grip safety for my Colt Series 70 Commander. It didn't need any... at all.
After It was installed there was a very slight rub at the engagement with the rear of the trigger bow as the safety was depressed and released. I decided not to make any immediate adjustments to it and dry practiced a lot and put 200 rounds through it to break it in.
Voila! No more rub. It works perfectly. Rock solid.
Exterior fit is very good with no sharp edges or huge gaps on my Colt's un-modifed frame. The pistol has a dark gray parkerized finish and the dark matt finish on the safety is very close.
I'm very happy with the results. Thanks Brownells!
Modern upgrade to an old pistol(05/02/2017)
I installed this grip safety into a 1950âs vintage Colt that I use for NRA Bullseye competition. Although the stock grip safety worked, I like the feel and have gotten used to the "speed bump" that is on the grip safety of a newer 1911 that I use for tactical shooting. So I decided to add this part to the Colt. Not having to cut the frame and then have it re-blued was very appealing to me. Minor fitting of the safety lever arm to the rear of the trigger bow was required. But it was easy to do. This part looks good and the bluing matches perfectly with the gun's frame and works as advertised. The only reason Iâm not giving it 5 stars is that there is a gap between the safety and the frame tang. Maybe because of the design year of the gun.
My new grip safety went on my 70 series Colt Combat Commander with a hard chrome finish. After trying it out I realized that I would have to do more than I thought. I had to trim and recontour the tab for the trigger engagement contact area and also had to trim about .010 total off the sides of the grip safety to have free movement back and forth inside the frames grip area. I figured it may have been because of the hard chrome on the frame, but I know that the hard chrome process is in tenths of a thousanth and would not have any interfence with the grip safety. Anyhow my trade is pharmaceutical machinery maintenence and am well versed in modifications and mechanical processes. Anyhow if one 'measures twice and cuts once' one should have no issues installing one of these nice units on their 1911 or commander. All I have to do now is reblue it and I'm sure it will be a beautiful beast once again. Very nice look. I should have taken photos.
Decent fit for a drop in part(31/10/2009)
Took only minor fitting to install in my milspec Springfield. Only had to polish the sides in 2 spots to get a great side to side fit. The only drawback for this part was the 1/4" gap from frame to beavertail. I can live with that as its better than the stock part and I never had to modify the frame.
Drop in fit and looks awesome.(08/03/2010)
If you can detail strip your 1911 this grip safety goes right into place with no problem. No altering of frame or part. Looks great and well made. No negatives.
Not Recommended for a Colt Gold Cup(09/03/2010)
I bought this product to install on a Colt Gold Cup Trophy MKIV/Series 80 model. Although I am a Colt factory trained armorer I was hoping this would be a drop in part. To my disappointment it was not. I suspect it could work with some minor fitting, but I don't like having to file if I can find a true drop in replacement. In my opinion there is too much room for error in doing so. I returned this item and am still on the hunt for a true drop in. I checked I would not recommend this to a friend, but to be specific I would not recommend it for a Colt Series 80. It may work fine for other guns. In reading the other review it appears the other gentleman had good luck with it in a Springfield. I carry mine as a defensive weapon and cannot afford for something to hang-up or catch.
Perfect fit(14/07/2010)
I replaced the hammer and the grip safety of a Colt 1911A1. The cut on this grip safety is a perfect fit for the frame. No fitting was required, and it looked stock. The polished stainless finish is the same as the one that it replaced.
PERFECT!!!!(26/08/2010)
Not sure what this gap thing is all about, but this grip safety is PERFECT if you have a Springfield 1911 G.I. model, got mine today and installed it with no issues and it looks GREAT!!![...]
It did just that!!!(15/11/2010)
Just received my Wilson Combat Stainless Steel Drop-in Beaver Tail grip Safety in the mail. It looked great and installed great. Zero fitting needed. It is truly a drop in!!! [...]Thanks to Wilson Combat for making such a great piece [...]
429GS Safety(18/02/2011)
Just installed one in my new Para GI Expert. It dropped right in, NO fitting at all. Fired 50 rds thru it so far, NO bobbles !!!!
definitely drop in(26/04/2011)
installed on remington r1, drop in no problem. looks great works perfect.
Nice Part(27/04/2011)
Previous post says this won't work in a Colt Series 80. Some fitting is required, but it works flawlessly. Lateral fit needed some polishing, otherwise works/fits great!
Great safety(11/05/2011)
Bought this for my RIA .38 super it is almost a true drop in I just needed to file down the thumb safety to get it to fit right I did this with a wilson trigger, sear, hammer and a two piece guide rod. I also did a spring kit it really changed the entire gun altogether. I am really impressed with the performance of my super now. Only if they had it in nickel it would be perfect.
Almost perfect(02/09/2011)
This fit the frame tangs on my Colt MK IV Gov't Model near perfect. It's not quite 'drop in' as it requires a little file work (LITTLE) on the internal engagement surfaces, but if you remove everything from the frame but the trigger, you can see exactly what to remove and where. Don't get crazy with your file, as I've ruined one of these trying to get it right. Overall I don't think you can get any better without sending your gun to a 'smith and having it permanently modified.
Works fine but doesnt look too great,(02/02/2012)
I gave it 3 stars because it does do what it says. It dropped right in no problems or issues. I installed this on a nickel plated Rock Island Armory. It saves your hand from slide bite and allows you to ride your grip higher which makes my shots a bit more accurate. It just looks like garbage when installed. It sits a little off axis and has gaps in alot of places. It did polish up very nicely to match the nickel. It does work 100% though. If you care more for the function than the aesthetics its a go.
Great job - I do continue to order this(24/05/2012)
I have stabilized all my 1911's with this part. It's just great, with no frame cutting or re-blueing. Does everything that it says.
Great Function, but fit poor(18/02/2013)
As far as function...A true drop in on my Remington R1 and works flawlessly. However, the fit is poor as there are 1/16" gaps between the beavertail and the frame. Looks like a cheap part even though it is a well made item. My suggestion, buy a beavertail with the original cut and fit it to the frame for that custom look.
Good Fit(30/03/2013)
This was a drop in fit for my Delta Elite.
not a drop in to a Colt Goldcup(28/12/2013)
This is a nice looking grip but it does not match my Gold cup. The beavertail extends way to far back and does not fit flush to the back of the frame. Otherwise it looks great and is well made.
Drop in on my Rock Island A1(05/03/2014)
I give this 4 stars because of the gap between the beaver tail and rear of frame. wilson could leave a little more material there to work with. Looks good any way.
Looks great on 30's era 1911A1(24/05/2014)
I bought one of these to replace the stock grip safety on my 30's era 1911A1. If you're like me, you probably think the bump looks uncomfortable but, when you have your hands wrapped around the gun, you can barely feel it. Currently, it is paired with a Commander styled hammer from EMC and it looks great! I did have to take it to a gunsmith because with the original sear and disconnector, the trigger pull was extremely heavy (12 pounds!) due to stiff fitting. But, all he had to do was fit a new sear and disconnector (Ed Brown Perfection) in with it and the trigger-pull is now around 5 pounds! In case you were wondering, there were some machining marks on it but, it doesn't bother me (In a weird way, I kinda like it). Performance wise, it does what it was designed to do. Overall, it appears to be a high quality part.
Needed Elbow Grease(23/04/2015)
Didn't quite drop in. The sides of the safety were grabbing the frame enough to stop it from functioning. Took about an hour of sanding the sides of the safety with 320 and 400 grit paper to make it fit and function properly Installed this on a Colt Delta Elite. Polished the sides after fitting and it now looks and feels great. Didn't need to file the trigger bar stop as seen on youtube or mentioned here. Trigger functioned perfectly after safety was fitted to frame.
Nice Beavertail!(04/01/2016)
This part dropped right in after some minor fitting with a few passes of a file and it works and looks great on my gun! It's not a perfect fit but it'll work for the time being.
Stainless beavertail(14/11/2016)
Bought for myself ,Install was fairly easy Minor fitting required to
fit on my Colt. Just 4 stars as I had to do some research on where to file to make fit pistol. Works great !
Works well - but not drop in(05/02/2017)
I installed the blued version of this Wilson âdrop inâ part in a 1950âs vintage Colt which required no frame fitting â but left a gap between the frame and safety. This stainless âdrop inâ part, installed in a 1980âs Colt Combat Elite required a fair amount of metal removal from the frame tang to allow it to move properly. Although this extra work allowed the grip safety to fit much tighter to the frame than the blued part in the other gun. So it looks much better. (See photos to compare fits of each part. Note: SS part still in process at time of photo.)
Minor fitting of the safety lever arm to the rear of the trigger bow was still required. But that is easy to do. Note: To help with how much metal you may need to remove, measure the original part at those critical locations as a starting point.
Some Fitting Required BUT No Frame MODs(05/05/2018)
Installed this on my M1991A1 without cutting the frame. Had to cut about 3/32" off and then grind the trigger bow blocking 'finger' to about a 40° Angle and polish for smooth operation.
Wish Wilson Combat had given me about 0.05" more material on upper back of the Beavertail (see picture) so that I could have ground and polished the Safety's Beavertail to more precisely fit the back of the frame, but fit pretty well for a 'drop-in' part. Did not want to cut the 'wings' on the back of the frame and have it re-coated at Robar (NP3).
Wilson Combat makes quality parts that do what they say they will do and at a reasonable price. Can now use a slightly higher grip vs. the stock 1911 Colt safety. Looks better and shoots better.
I was hesitant at first in the thought of putting a "drop in" part in a duty gun, but was amazed at the quality and fit/finish in the end result! Did exactly what it stated it would do, and dropped in perfect on my Colt 1991 5 inch model. Next to no fitting, and the fitment on the gun looks like it came right from the factory that way! No noticeable gaps, and the lines on the gun match up on the safety perfect. Even the finish on the safety matches that on my gun, and the gun didn't have to be re-blued, or majorily altered.
I will buy again(18/02/2010)
I bought the grip safty for my Rock Island 1911A1 worked great took about 4 min for me to put in. I did not haft to file anything works like a champ
Happy Customer(30/03/2010)
The Safety/Beavertail works great on my Rock Island 1911. I did have to modify the original hammer to get proper fit. To get this item operational I also had some extra file work when matched to the Wilson Combat Ambi Thumb safety. But it looks great, feels great and works great.
Great product(17/04/2010)
Bought this to replace the sharp edged, hand biting, factory safety on a Springfield Milspec 1911-A1. Dropped right in with only slight fitting required to get proper trigger function.
Awesome!!!(21/04/2010)
Bought this for my Rock Island GI model. It fell right into place! No grinding, filing, nothing ! Almost like it was made for my pistol!! Goodbye hammer bite!!!
excellent(23/06/2010)
I ordered this for my Colt 80 series Government Model (NRM) and it fit in perfectly without any alterations needed. For my Colt, this was definitely a 'drop-in' part. Very pleased with the product, it looks great and definitely enhances my hold on the gun allowing for a higher grip.
Best Drop In on the market(31/07/2010)
Called a drop in, but that is not entirely accurate. This piece requires some hand fitting as should be expected. However, the drop in part really applies to the way it fits into the frame. It fits into a Colt Goverment model very well.
Took a lot of fitting!(20/08/2010)
This is my second Wilson Combat Drop In Beavertail Safety. My first was for my Colt Defender and it took minimal fitting. This was for my full size 1991A1 and it took a substantial amount of work to get it to fit. This in turn took off large amounts of bluing. I am fortunate to have attended a 1911 armorer's class or it would not have been possible to fit. Once on and cold blued it looks good on the pistol. I wouldn't do it again.
Cures Hammer Bite with Minimal Smithing(01/10/2010)
The answer to all hammer bite on GI spec 1911s. Fits and functions perfectly. I did have to bob the hammer considerably as was mentioned in the product specs. Grip feels very comfortable and does allow for a higher grip with can only increase ones shooting. It is more of a matte black finish but still looks good
True drop in(07/02/2011)
Fell right into place without one stroke of a file on my Rock Island Armory.
works well(03/03/2011)
Just a bit of fitting as it said it would and then dropped straight in, works well no more hammer bite, highly recomended
Great product! Great value!(10/03/2011)
It fit my Remington R1 perfectly. It looks and feels great, and functions flawlessly. It needed no fitting at all, and complemented the BUL hammer, sear and disconnector combo (also a great value) as though it came from the same maker. The improved feel and control absolutely amazed me. The finish matched the rest of the gun, too. My compliments on a great product!
True Drop In Grip Safety(22/04/2011)
Bought this for a Springfield 1911-A1 as i was getting bitten by the hammer .The ad said -Drop In-and was i pleasently surprised as it DID drop in..No filing or fitting required whatsoever. I did have to remove some metal from the hammer though-that's what a Dremel's for ! The ad did say to use a bobbed or Commander hammer. A great product..no more hammer bite !!
awesome(06/05/2011)
i got this for my colt 1991 government model it was definitly a drop-in part. i got a night hawk hammer to not have to bob my original hammer.
as the safety came it had to be depressed about half way or perhaps slightly less before the trigger could be pulled.
fit is very nice and this part is very comfortable.
my wife has smaller hands than i do and used to have a hard time pulling the trigger and holding the safety down the speed bump solved this problem for her.
Wilson Combat(20/05/2011)
The grip safety dropped right in to my Colt XSE, but there is a sizable gap between the frame and the ears of the safety. I need to see how it shoots and maybe dehorn it a bit. There is enough of a gap and edge on the safety that I think I may cut myself while shooting it.
Best Add On You Can Do(05/06/2011)
Fit and Finish Perfect! Slight Polishing and it was working like a charm!
Excellent(19/07/2011)
Very minor fitting, perfect color match, very small gap. I installed it on my Colt government model with the value line hammer and sear, looks and shoots great.
Great part, needed a bit of fitting(13/11/2011)
Good, well made part from Wilson Combat (wouldn't expect anything else!)
I'm definitely not a gunsmith, but have a mechanically inclined brain. With that being said, it was NOT a "drop-in" part. It required some minor fitting and filing in order for it to function properly. I had to file down the inside of the safety so that the safety could be depressed enough to allow the trigger to be pulled. Also had to file down the notch on the protrusion. (See pics)
Installed on my Auto-Ordinance 1911A1 Gov't. model, along with a Wilson Combat value line hammer and WC full length guide rod. Gun fires better than when I picked it up now! And with no danger of hammer bite.
Best beavertail for Aluminum Frame(29/12/2011)
I was looking to upgrade the GI grip safety on my Springfield Armory GI lightweight commander pistol. As you may know, these frames are surface hardened, and should not be filed down to fit to radius required for other beavertails. This was my best option. As many have stated, this required some fitting -- a little bit at a time, not too difficult at all. I recommend this to anyone in my situation.
Great fix with almost no effort(24/02/2012)
Installed on a gov't model that I didn't want to cut. I had no fitting issues at all. It fit and worked fine on the first try.
Perfect swap out(25/02/2012)
Ordered this grip safety for my RIA 1911A1 and it fell into place like it was supposed to be there. The high rise on the beaver tail made it much more stable in my hands, and i didn't have the stock safety digging into my hand anymore. Mated with a combat hammer and longer trigger, it's literally transformed my 1911 into a beautiful shooter. And as always, fast shipping from Brownell's as i had it in my mail 2 days later with just normal USPS 1st class shipping.
Excellent Quality(06/05/2012)
Crazy fast shipping. Ordered on Thursday, received on Saturday. Looks great on my High Standard 1911 and works perfectly with no fitting.
well worth it(06/07/2012)
a very good upgrade for 1911 pistols. went right into my springfield 1911 A-1 GI with no fitting at all. just removed the old grip safety and installed this one. simple as that! if you have a standard spur hammer, you will have to replace with a bobbed hammer to avoid hitting the beavertail.my gun has a better fit and feel in my hand now
Good Quality But . . .(18/07/2012)
This piece is very well made and functionally was a drop in, but the lines did not match the Remington 1911 R1 very well so I returned. This is no fault of Wilson and it allows you to have a beavertail with no frame work. Other than hand fitting or buying a 1911 with the beavertail installed this is the best option to install a commander style hammer. Worked perfect with the Cylinder and Slide trigger and hammer sear kit. I would recommend only if fitting a beavertail is not an option.
Perfect Fit(29/08/2012)
This went into a Colt 1991A1 Series 80. Blueing matched my pistol perfectly and installation was as easy as it gets. Used in conjunction with the Wilson Combat Drop In Hammer and have had no problems. Not fitting was required for either part.
Wilson drop in grip safety(10/09/2012)
I installed this on a Series 80 Gold cup. It dropped right in and functions flawlessly.
I would buy this product again(13/09/2012)
For a simi drop in it works great. makes the gun look good and feel good when shooting. Very nice
worth it(04/01/2013)
i installed this grip safety on my old norinco 1911. it took quite a bit of filing and sanding in the engagement area to get it to work properly. BUT once i was done, wow. fit much much better than the original and works flawlwssly. definitely one of the biggest improvements i've made.
A waste of time and effort(07/06/2013)
Item installed without a hitch. No fitting needed, however the gap (about an eigth of an inch) between the frame tang and the beavertail itself was completely unacceptable. Item had to be removed and returned
Would buy again(31/08/2013)
Installed one on my Colt Gov. model last night . It required minor fitting but was relatively easy . I am not by any means a gunsmith and was able to do it .
excellent choice(13/01/2014)
Just bought and installed this, the value line sear and hammer from Wilson Combat in my S-A GI Mil spec. Installation went like silk, no mods required from anything, all drop in. Very pleased with everything, cant wait to shoot it.
DROP RIGHT IN(28/01/2014)
I have used many of these over the years and never had I have had to do any fitting. The quality has never gone down either. I used this recently on a brand new High Standard 1911 and it dropped right in and blended well with the frame. Totaly happy once again.
Very pleased(26/03/2014)
Installed in RIA 1911. Required a bit of fitting, but is a vast improvement over the OEM grip safety. Completely removed the issues I was having with hammer bite on a high grip.
Listed as drop in for Norinco, no way(18/09/2014)
I originally purchased the regular 1911 Safety which Wilson lists as a drop in for Norinco 1911's. It dropped right in but with an obscene gap that looked as though it would chew up my hand when fired.
I called Wilson and sent them some photos and they told me it will not fit the Norinco and that that the Commander style would fit better, so they exchanged it. The Commander style eliminates the gap but doesn't allow the thumb safety holes to line up. The piece will have to be milled to work properly.
So if you have a Colt I suppose this works fine but any other copy beware.
Drop in is exactly right(09/12/2014)
Another great product from WIlson Combat. I have no complaints about this safety. No adjusting, machining, or filing required. Took 5 minutes to install and looks and funtions great. I have upgraded my 1911 with 8 different Wilson Combat items so far, all purchased here at Brownells.
Installed on a mkIV/S70 Gold Cup(15/11/2016)
I have a mIV Gold Cup in great condition, but was tired of the antiquated A1 grip safety & hook hammer. I picked this up (along with the speed hammer) assuming I'd have to do some serious fitting & massaging. Boy was I wrong. Dropped right into the frame & was functioning flawlessly in minutes. It looks GREAT, really modernizing the pistol from the 1980s. The palm swell took a little getting used to since I was accustomed to the old flat A1 safety, but is a GREAT feature. Would definitely recommend. Well, for a Colt mkIV Series 70 Gold Cup Nat'l Match at least.
Wilson drop in grip safety worked well on Colt 1991A1 government Series 80. Fit fwd end of grip safety to frame and trigger. Added Wilson commander hammer. Also Wilson hammer strut, and sear. Fit original Colt thumb safety lever to sear. Found easy to follow mechanically correct youtube videos of how to fit the parts. Everything went together easily, perfect function. Color matches Colt.
Excellent and comfortable safety(31/07/2018)
An almost true "drop in" part, I've installed 2 of these on different guns, and they both work great. Fitting around the frame needs some work for it to be really smooth, but the arm the blocks trigger has always been perfect. Part is a standard blued finish, but is blued inside and out.
