BY FAR THE BEST SHOOTING MAT I'VE OWNED!(12/03/2012)
In the past year, I have really began getting into shooting matches pretty hot and heavy. When I started shooting thr NRA sanctioned Service Rifle Matches, I cam to the quick reality that I needed a high quality shooting mat. This is for both the prone and kneeling shooting positions, as well as organization when on the firing line.
After quite a bit of research, I was immediately turned on to the US Peacekeeps shooting mat. There were several features that really caught my eye and seemed that this mat would work perfectly for what I needed it for. So I went ahead and placed my order and waited for the brown truck to arrive.
When the mat arrived, I couldn't have been happier with it. Not only was it a lot bigger than I imagined, but it was very thick and had quite a bit of padding. The size of the mat was huge plus, especially for a guy my size (6'3" tall & 250lbs). Overall size of the mat when laying flat is 36" wide by 81.5" long by 3/4" thick.
When not in use, this mat neatly folds up into a breifcase size and can be easily carrier. I found that rolling the mat into itself was tyhe easiest and made it easier to carry. The mat includes both a sewn in handle and a shoulder strap (removable) that is attached by two heavy duty polymer clips/d-rings. Once the mat has been rolled up or folded, it secured by three large heavy duty quick release polymer clasps. These clasps prevetn the mat from opening up when not in use or when being transported.
The material (OD Green) of the mat is super tough and is actually 1000 denier abrasion resistant nylon. Even though it is tough, it is still comfortable when laying or kneeling on the mat. All of your pressure points (knees, elbows, etc.) and cushioned by the 3/4" thick padding that is built into the mat itself.
There are also a textured and sewn padding area near the front of the mat which is usally where the shooter's elbows would be located when shooting in the prone position. The texture prevents your pressure points from sliding around, even when affected by the recoil of your rifle. Not to mention that it is also very comfortable in this area of the mat.
Probably the thing that most intrueged me was the the two built in pockets at the very front of the mat. One is a zippered pocket in which you can store ammo and other small items. The other pocket is secured by two small polymer quick release clasps and when opened reveals an ammo pouch for 20 rounds of ammo and an area to store a ballistics chart, ID's and pens/pencils.
So far this mat has seriously improved my scores when shooting in the prone position. The textured surface helps keep my elbows nice and stiff and prevent them from moving, which would ultimately ruin my solid base. I love this mat and it even has uses beyond shooting at matches.
I would feel comfortable in humping this into the field while hunting. It would be great to lay out anywhere and give the shooter a good stable base in which to shoot from. I have recommended this to other shooters that I know and I cannot say enough good things about it. I highly recommend this mat to any shooters, especially for long range and match shooting. But one and you will not be disappointed!
BEST mat out there? Maybe!(10/06/2013)
Thick padding, which makes it very COMFORTABLE. LARGE size, a Zippered POCKET for brass and a window for your drop/wind dope sheet. Then when your done shooting it folds into an easily carried package with it's own carrying sling.
Built very well, the cordura still shows no sign of wear. Maybe as good as anyone could build a shooting mat?
