Great Upgrade(08/11/2009)
Smooth and snag free.
Fit perfect on my 1100 3 gun shotgun.
Slide your finger over it and it snaps off.
Must Have(10/12/2009)
Safety was easy to install. Took about 5 minutes. Easy to find with right index finger and is easily manipulated. awesome purchase for my 870. A must have!
Got in the way(27/12/2009)
While a quality item, I found this safety protruded too far and prevented me from manipulating the trigger well. Unless you have extremely long fingers or don't mind battling the protruding safety to work the trigger, I suggest you consider the Scattergun Tech big head safety.
nice tactical addition(11/02/2010)
Nice addition to my "tacticalized" Express 7 with pistol grip and folding stock. Sure and positive disengagement. Easy to install. Be sure you have a 1/16th inch punch.
Great for quick shots(16/02/2010)
This is perfect for those quick shots at Mr. Rabbit. The fact that it protrudes as much as it does allows you to click the safety off useing the part of the finger between the middle and base knuckles, leaving the fingertip in position to engage the trigger much quicker.
Great for Left-Hand-Shooters!(08/03/2010)
I have one installed on my Remington 7615 Police Carbine 16,5" (.223 Rem.). It´s possible to operate the safety with your left thumb.
Speed Safety(21/04/2010)
This is a must have for the 870. Hunting or tactical, you can't go wrong with this. Easy to find without feeling around for it.
Great, but not with Knoxx Recoil Stock(10/06/2010)
I had this safety on my 870. It worked great until I tried to add a Knoxx Recoil Reducing Stock. The safety hit the stock and would not allow it to function properly. Both are great items, I just had to choose which one I wanted on the gun. This safety is easy to install and uninstall!
A must have(09/08/2010)
The title says it all, it's very easy to install and very easy to use. Muscle memory now has one less thing to worry about when you really truly get into that [*] moment. I have recommended this product to my friends and they now use it.
needs better instuctions(25/08/2010)
The safety itself is impressive, the instructions suck. They need to have a diagram and more detailed wording. Once I figured out how the original safety came out I had no problems. If you do this by yourself, you might need a vice to hold the trigger assembly, unless you have four hands.
almost perfect(10/09/2010)
If you are looking for something like this, just get it. It works perfectly, and is very easy to install. I would have given it 5 stars if they painted the red ring on it. Pretty minor, but I can't give a perfect score for something that isn't perfect.
Fixes my biggest 870 gripe(09/11/2010)
I've always hated the rear safety of the 870 but still used it because of steel shot regs. When I found out about I immediately ordered it. Easy to install. Looks goofy but it's very practical. Wish I'd had this 40 years ago.
installs in less than 5 minutes(09/01/2011)
i would have thought this was a ambidextrious safety, as in you could but it in either way, but it wouldnt :(
i HAD to put the big side on the right hand side of the gun. being left handed i thought this was going to be a bummer, but actually its not as bad as i thought. lefties have to adapt to the right hand world anyways, and a simple wrist twist to reach with my thumb is all i need to make it run. literally installed it within minutes.
No-brainer for high-stress situations(13/04/2011)
First off, like the other reviewer, I knocked off one star because it'd be nice to have a painted red ring for visual confirmation that the safety is off. Otherwise, it does what it's supposed to do.
I automatically flick the safety off when going from at-the-ready with my trigger finger along the receiver to the trigger face. Easy.
If I recall correctly, the instructions specifically state that this safety is not compatible nor recommended for use with the Knoxx recoil-reducing stock. If you have patience and you're not afraid of using a Dremel and fine file to modify your Knoxx stock, you can run this VCS safety with it. Just install both components, put the firearm muzzle-down (unloaded, of course!), place your weight on the buttstock to compress the spring, and you'll plainly see where you need to remove some material.
Patience is the key. Depending on which Dremel tool you use (metal?), you can easily put a scratch or two on the receiver.
That said, I've been running this combo for the past 2 years and have shot countless slugs with no obvious signs of interference between the safety and Knoxx stock.
best bang for the buck(25/07/2011)
I own a 4 differnt models of 870 (surbu, wingmaster, magnums in 12g and 20g) . They all have the safety intalled. less then ten minutes to intall, no gunsmith needed. For me its a must have. In one step you put your finger on the trigger and take off the safety. You never have to wonder is it on or off. just side it over and find out.
The only thing I can dig this product on is, I know people are going to want it in stainless.
best inexpensive upgrade available(28/07/2011)
After installing this on my patrol shotgun I ordered more for all the shotguns I own and told my friends to do the same. The difference it makes in high stress situations is amazing. I love it. The material seems more rugged that the factory part.
Don't leave home without it!(23/09/2011)
Fits perfectly. Functions perfectly. Super easy to manipulate under stress... great for personal defense, hunting, and competition. I also disagree that it looks "goofy". I rather like the look of it.
Hope it wears in(21/12/2011)
After reading the other reviews I ordered the big speed safety. The instructions were OK, but a quick trip to YOUTUBE & all questions were answered. The only reason I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars is that it feels much stiffer than the original safety. I am using it with a Blackhawk stock (5 star product by the way) but without the recoil reducer. I can't tell if the button has any contact with the stock. If anyone has a similar experience, what's the fix? I am happy in general & feel it is a good upgrade.
Great Safety Switch.(26/12/2011)
I have installed 2 of these safeties, one on my 870 and one on my 11-87. Both were very easy and took only a few minutes to do each. I would recommend a set of mini-needle nose pliers and a thin punch to make the job easier.
The safety installs only one way, so us lefties will have to make due. But you do get used to it over time. Activation of the safety is incredibly easy with gloves, in wet conditions, when your hands are cold and when you're stressed and no button ever seems big enough.
Only one problem though. Both of the safeties that I bought did not have the red stripe on the left side of the safety which is an indication that the firearm is "hot". This could become problematic for some shooters. Over time I think this is something you'd get used to due to muscle memory but initially this could create a tremendous safety problem (no pun intended). The solution is very easy. A craft paint brush and a bit of red paint. So despite the flaw I still give this 5 stars.
I prefer this over other safeties because the ball design allows you to activate the button with you press as a slight angle. With non-ball designs I find that your finger can slip off the button, but not this one.
It has its pros and cons(12/01/2012)
I use my 1100 in 3 gun competition. So a larger safety increases my initial first shot times. The nice thing about this safety is you can depress it with the middle of the trigger finger instead of the pad of the finger. So your pad can be near the trigger ready to fire that first shot, just bump the safety with the middle of your finger and you're ready to go. The down side is that the size of the safety makes it rub that same middle portiong of the finger while shooting. Which is just slightly annoying sometimes.
great safety(15/01/2012)
I easily installed the Vang Dome Safety on both my 870 and 1100 tactical. easy to install and use. My co-workers at the police department are also using them and may be installing them on the police shotguns unless someone of a higher paygrade thinks it will lessen the liability of Remington. ALSO. I did not take a star off for the lack of a red ring or red paint or red anything on the left button to indicate "ready for firing". A shooter must know his weapon and how it works and therefore should know by looking or feeling to see if the weapon is safe.
This thing's really neat!(01/03/2012)
Bought this to replace the standard safety on my 870-based Serbu Super-Shorty AOW 12 gauge. Because of the pistol grip on this NFA weapon I was having difficulty smoothly releasing the safety. With Vang's "domed" safety I can release it with the inside 2nd joint of my right index finger while getting into firing position. Liked it so much I replaced the safeties on my other 870s with this little gadget. Hans Vang strikes again! Thanks. ----Mac Scott
Very functional(15/06/2012)
Great part, easy to fit and use. The only minor issue is that it doesnt have the red ring around it to indicate that the safety is off. Was very easy to fit, took about 5 minutes. I installed this on a Norinco 870 with no problems.
AWESOME TACTICAL 870 UPGRADE(27/08/2012)
Love how fast I can switch the safety off as I move my finger into firing position. No wasted motion. Should be easy to operate in a real moment of need as this is on our HD 870. Using this with a Blackhawk Knoxx stock and have no problems (stock is set back a bit by a single point sling attachment between stock and receiver). Had to remove stock to remove trigger group as it was hitting the pistol grip for anyone running this or similar stocks. Still, very fast and easy to install. Like the directions say, consult a gunsmith if not completely familiar. Huge improvement over the factory safety!
Perfect for Tactical/Self Defense(30/09/2012)
Vang Comp has built a legacy of great products, and here's another one. This safety is designed to outlive your Remington 870! I feel that it's a perfect addition for a self-defense, home security, tactical firearm. Due to its size the safety is easy to dis-engage, and even in pitch black you know exactly where it is (think middle of night high stress scenario). With that said due to its size I do not recommend it for hunting firearms. I installed it on my turkey gun. Turkey hunting involves hours of sitting still holding your weapon in a "ready" position. Even when wearing insulated gloves the safety is annoying due to its size and its constant presence. Obviously when one buys this safety you realize its big, but to be fair Vang Comp delivers 100% of what is advertised.
Great Tactical Safety(13/11/2012)
If you need a red line to tell you if your safety is on, you should leave the shotgun in your safe.
In a tactical environment your attention should be focused on the possible threat(s), not on the safety. If you have doubts about whether your safety is on, just reach around to the left side of the rear of the trigger guard with your middle finger. If the left side of the safety is flat, the safety is on. If there is a bump, your safety is off. Never, ever, take your eyes off of the threat(s), except to check for other threat(s).
Unless, you are highly trained, in a crises situation, it is possible color will turn to black and white, or will distort. Read some of Lt. Col. Dave Grossman literature or books.
Must have(05/12/2012)
This is great for home defense and tactical situations, you don't put your finger in the trigger well unless you are about to shoot and when you put your finger in the trigger well your finger hits the safety to the fire position easily and smoothly. I would have given 5 stars if it had the red indicator for extra safety, a very minor thing but I would definitely recommend this product to anyone.
Makes your safety much easier to locate.(16/01/2013)
I installed a Mesa Urbino stock on my 870 HD gun. Because of the wide pistol grip on the Urbino stock I found the standard Remington safety was too short and small to suit me. The Van Comp really solved that problem. Installed easily.
Great solution to a common problem(20/02/2013)
I purchased this safety because I did not think the Remington safety was easy to reach under stress. I painted the red ring for fire with Testors model paint and a toothpick. It was very easy to install and is almost perfect. The safety head is very large and may be irritating if you want it to disappear once set it on fire.
Personally on a self defense gun, I don't mind that the safety protrudes a bit once pressed.
Perfect(05/04/2013)
I don't use safeties as a rule. The gun is either under my direct control and hot, or it's not hot. The exception to this rule is when working with a new shooter or someone who's shooting history I don't know. I recently got a Remington 870 and despise the stock safety. Getting it turned off in a hurry could easily leave you dead and I could see slipping off and hitting the trigger in the process. Not ok.
This big dome safety is really easy to take off with your finger straight, and it's also very natural to switch it off as your finger enters the trigger guard. I don't use it much, but this is a huge improvement to the safety for when I do.
Random aside: I'm annoyed that 'Defensive Shooter' isn't an option for describing yourself when you write one of these. I don't hunt or compete.
THIS IS THE ONE(19/07/2013)
Less than 2 minutes to install on an 870. Used 1 5/32" punch to drift the 2 trigger group pins, and one 3/32" punch to drift the safety detent spring retaining pin. If you've ever torn your 870 down to clean it, you can install this in less than 5 minutes--EASY. Note: A standard straight pick eases the reinstallation of the safety detent spring.
IMPORTANT: This should NOT be used on a firearm that might be used by inexperienced shooters!!!
I would buy again(21/09/2013)
Bought this to replace the factory safety on my NEF pardner 12 ga. Pump and it fit and functioned perfectly with no modifications to the trigger group at all, now I can release the safety with the side of my trigger finger. Also goes perfect with my blackhawk specops NRS stock & forend, It to fits remington 870 shotgun, fit right on my NEF pardner 12 ga. Shotgun.
Pretty nice(13/01/2014)
This is way better than I thought it would be. It would be almost impossible to leave the safety on and get in place to pull the trigger. I may add one to my 870 as well.
very big safety(20/04/2015)
high quality part, easy to install. there is no red marking on the "hot side" so i used a sliver of red electricians tape and worked well. the button itself is almost too big, i can feel the button when safety is off and while firing the gun. overall I recommend this over the stock rem safety.
Makes safety selection tactile indicated... no more wondering if the safety is on/off. useful for my 870 home defense shotgun.
easy to install for a layman.
Superb(20/07/2017)
Decided on Vang instead of Wilson, pleased with the quality and size of the knob. exceptionally easy to find and engage, much more so than the stock safety. Great value at this price, not obtrusive with my ATI pistol grip stock either. only critique is the missing red stipe on the "off" side, not a big deal but would be 5 stars/perfect if it had it.
Great upgrade(19/12/2017)
Much larger then the factory safety and looks great. you can easily disengage the safety while moving your finger to the trigger using the side of your finger. If you use your 870 as a home defense weapon then this is a great upgrade.
Large, dome-shaped button is quick to locate. Just a quick push with the side of your trigger finger will disengage the safety. Round profile does not snag clothing or guncase liner. Drop-in installation, right-hand use only.
