The Brownells 1911 Plunger Tube Staking Tool is essential for any pistol smith. Solid Quality (03/09/2015)

This is a solid, quality tool that is easy to use. It took more time unpacking it than it took to stake the plunger tube. To avoid fumbling I put the frame in a soft jaw vise. Arrange a portable light to illuminate the inside of the frame to aid in getting the anvil on the pin(s) first try. I also put a piece of tape over the plunger tube as a precaution to protect the fresh Cerakote finish.

As a bonus this tool works great as a carrier dog pin staking tool on Remington 870/1100/1187 shotguns.

1911 Plunger Tube Staking Tool (27/10/2015)

I purchased this tool to re-stake the loose plunger tube on a 1911 Colt. This is a very well made and heavy duty tool that should last many years. Use was very straightforward and simple. Not counting the pistol disassembly time I would say it took about 3 minutes to mount and re-stake the two plunger tube pins. Nothing not to like about this tool.

needs work, the hardness of the staking tip is week. I crushed two so far.

Tip Not Hardened (30/07/2015)

It looks like the tool should work well. It did not work for me because the tip supplied to crimp was not hardened and simply deformed without crimping. The tip was so soft the threads and hex socket head failed when I attempted to remove it from the base after first use.

It should be possible to reshape and case harden a standard 10-32 x 5/16 set screw ($0.25) with more threads that may be more durable if the replacement tip doesn't work at $4.00 (wish I had been offered a free replacement when I called to discuss). The photo shows how the tip deformed to hole dimensions instead of crimping.

Should have this (30/10/2009)

Works as advertised. As I was crimping the plunger tube, I did indeed feel the Staking Support become temporarily seized inside the plunger tube. However, when the pressure from the crimper was relieved, the Staking Support slid out of the plunger tube easily. A little expensive, but it does prevent damage to the plunger tube, which also saves time and frustration.
