Decent Starter Set(21/04/2010)
Purchased this set to build AR15's. This is a nice little set stored neatly in a wooden holder. Meant to be stored and not moved, as there is no lid to the tray. Has all punch sizes needed for general AR maintenance/builds. The hammer has a steel/nylon/brass insert which is nice. The smallest punch broke the 2nd time I used it. All in all, a decent set.
good value(28/03/2011)
This punch and hammer kit is a great value for a starter "gun works" tool box, quite frankly most people wouldn't know just how expensive good tools can get, and thus wouldn't know what to expect. For the price that brownells is charging for this kit you're not going to do much better.
The hammer is very good for light tapping of pins on anything from glocks and 1911's to AR15's, it's not a heavy duty hammer, but it's not meant to be, brass hammers are for delicate work and this one does it's job. The punches are pretty good too, they're nicely labeled and have gotten lots of tasks done for me without galling or needing to be filed down. The brass punch has come in handy once or twice though I haven't really banged on it too much.
If you're looking for a professional kit, this isn't really it, but if you need something to start you off on working on your own guns this kit is worth the money in my opinion.
I wish replacement parts were available"(05/01/2012)
This is a decent quality set, especially for the price. I basically made a hinged lid for it so that it can stay in my range bag.(probably its best use) The punches are of good quality but too short for alot of pins that I have encountered, also the nylon insert strips it's threads very easily. Not unexpected but it would certainly be nice if replacement nylon heads were readily available...
