Lucky if you get one that fits(20/02/2016)
Typically, you would think Hogue makes some solid, comfortable products. Well, this one is quite solid. So solid it won't fit. If you look at the instructions, it'll say you should note the alignment of the gas tube port on the upper receiver with one of the many available gas tube holes around the barrel nut when hand tightened, then tighten it to the next hole, which is anywhere from 1/2 of a notch to a notch and a half. Well, I was lucky enough to score myself on the halfway mark. I lubed up the sucker quite copiously. I then hand tightened it to line up perfect with one of the holes on the barrel nut. Of course, that's not going to fly (or will it just fly off?), so I took out the supplied wrench and noticed it won't fit. It's not the right size. The 2" end of the wrench is too small. The 2 1/8" side is too big. OK, great. Fortunately I have a strap wrench handy. I'll take that and tighten it. Well... that didn't work either. I got halfway there, muscled it, and now I feel Hogue owes me a new strap wrench because I tore mine up. Despite my best efforts, the gas tube won't go in because the hole is completely misaligned. How Hogue expects you to tighten it a whole notch, let alone one and a half, is beyond me.
Bottom line: this is a piece of junk. You'll notice in another review of a similar Hogue hand guard that the reviewer suffered a similar issue. Clearly I'm not the only one. I typically don't write scathing reviews, but I feel like I have to put out a PSA on this for humankind. So here goes: If you are a decent human being, do not buy this product.
Would not buy again(14/09/2012)
The pins on my barrel wrench were not long enough to engage into the barrel nut. The directions gave instruction on how to modify your gas tube-meanwhile the description block on the website said that modification of the tube was not required. I didn't want to modify my gas tube. The grip handle didn't come with the package, evidently that is sold separately.
Great forend with Hogue 3-gun extention(29/09/2012)
This is a super short forend for carbine Ar15 rifles. If you use Hogue's "3gun" extention with this forend, you get a perfect 15" length forend on a 18-20" Ar rifle, and have the rubber grip out where you need it. I have this setup on 2 of my guns and they look and work fantastic.
Not worth the trouble or money(09/10/2013)
This has got to be the worst engineered product I have bought in quite a while. I understand that you have to pay sixty plus dollars for an aluminum tube, but then they tell you that you will have to bend your gas tube an advise you get a gunsmith to do it for ( $65-$100 dollars an hour). Lastly the barrel nut needs a strap wrench or as they advise get an old belt and a pair of vice grips to put in on. I guest just get it tight is good enough, not to worry about torquing it down.
Horrible(29/12/2017)
Just finished installing this total piece of junk on a buddy's gun. The wrench they give you is a joke and you have to buy a special gas tube or mess with bending the existing one. I have install many many handguards and this is the WORST one I have ever used.
Easy to install free float forend(26/01/2010)
Installed this forend on my Armalite 16" midlength gas system and was really glad I did. Clean lines, full free float, hogue pebble grip surface. The only down side is that you have to drill and tap for a bipod stud.
Hogue hits home run!(04/02/2015)
I did my first install of a hogue free float tube today and was very happy with it. I will say that reading the included instructions prior to starting was very helpful as they were very clear and tell you what you need to know before you make a mistake. The included wrench is less complicated than it sounds. Very nice product, well made, very sturdy. I will be using this product on my next AR-15 build, parts should be here soon. Both rifles are for target/varmint shooting.
