Highly recommend(30/07/2012)
I couldnt stand the "cheap" look of the factory plastic handguard. I may have been lucky but the walnut handguard matched my stock perfectly. I get alot of positive comments from others at the range. Enhances the the look of the entire rifle. You shouldnt be disappointed. I would recommend the handguard removal tool from Brownells to ease in installation.
Looks Amazing(13/12/2012)
This was a drop in part. I didnt have to do a single thing. I was expecting to have to do a little fitting here or there but it went right on. Doesnt rub anywhere.
Its already finished. Looks like it came on my rifle to begin with.
Beautiful. I watched several videos on disassembly. You need to go pretty far but not anything that goes too far.
You need the handguard wrench. I got the badger ordnance one. Its nice. You need a 3/8" wrench for the gas block bolt. Watch a few videos.
Backordered but it will come.(15/07/2013)
First, you may be put off (exactly as I was) that this seems to stay on backorder but, if you order one you will eventually get it. I ordered on 2/28 (on backorder) but I did get in the second week in July.
Springfield made the finish will match your stock. I however had put 16 coats of linseed oil on mine and of course that made the rifle a shade darker. I am doing the same to this rail and I am sure it will be a great match. Tested for fit first and it is perfect with no sanding and/or other tooling needed for sizing. You should have the correct tool for making the installation though. Would have waited until all was completely done to do review but I thought many may be put off by backorder and not know it would make it to you sometime. My guess is a certain number has to be pre-sold before Springfield will fill an order for Brownells. Just a guess.
Looks Great(02/08/2013)
It looks great on rifle. Mine was about 1/16 too long so I had to hand fit. Hand filed. Be very careful started to crack on back when checking fitting on hand filing. Luckily isn't too long or noticeable. Need Hand guard clip pliers to take on and off the hand guard clip.
AMAZING!(23/01/2014)
I just recently purchased my M1A and fell in love immediately. The only thing I didn't like much was the fiberglass hand guard. It just looks cheap. When I found the walnut one here I was ecstatic. Easy to install with the proper tools. I had a order mix up and Brownells not only sent me the correct hand guard, they refunded me for the inconvenience. Amazing customer service.
Out of package only fits standard barrel(16/07/2014)
Great product, is actually marked Boyd's on the inside, seems like SAI must have bought the rest of them since Boyd's isn't producing them anymore. I'm sure its a great hand guard, but contrary to the Q&A question asked previously, this ONLY fits standard weight barrels out of the package. Bought this for my medium weight barrel, hand guard has to be pressed on to fit. It could fit a medium weight barrel with some sanding on the inside, especially around the op rod guide area. More than likely you will need to sand it a little to allow clearance for wide part of op rod. Handguard should contact the barrel as little as possible, and you should have about a 1/16-1/8" gap between the hand guard and stock. Allowing the hand guard to touch the stock will affect accuracy.
With Minor Sanding, it fit's SA Loaded.(27/03/2017)
With the NM barrel, it does take some minor sanding inside the handguard as well as the edges. Nothing that should keep you away from the fantastic handguard.
I applied several coats of BLO to the handguard and my SA walnut stock. They match each other perfectly, which was my highest concern.
Some modification required (11/12/2017)
Pro: nice walnut wood. Will enhance the look of a classic M1A. Cons: I believed this to be a drop in part on a Springfield M1A standard barrel. I knew some sanding would be required to clear the stock. The hand guard was too long and would not fit over the barrel. For $50+ dollars, this should be a pretty much drop in fit on one of Springfield's own rifles. The internal clearance and length needed significant sanding. Now multiple finish coats are needed after sanding.
