Dead-On Spacing For Grip Frames, Hammer Spurs and More
The only way to get true, accurate line spacing when checkering backstraps, triggerguards, grip frames, ribs and hammer spurs; anywhere an improved gripping surface is needed. Finer cuts give a nice matting effect to reduce glare and light distortion. Procedure is very similar to wood checkering. Layout your master lines (or use a guide like our .45 Checkering Guide), then establish the pattern by moving the file a few teeth each time using the previous lines as the guide. Once the pattern is fully laid out, bring to final depth with a 60° needle file.
SPECS: 8" (20.3cm) length x ½" (12.7mm) wide. Cutting area: 6" (15.2cm) x ½" (12.7mm).

Great Product(02/04/2012)
This is another great product from Brownell's. Used this file with the 1911 checkering guide (a must have!) to checker the front strap of my Delta Elite. The file cut fast and worked perfectly.
Simple & Quick(05/03/2010)
I used the file to serrate the back of a 1911 slide. With just a few minutes practice on the end of a 1 x 1 piece of bar stock I felt confident enough to proceed to the slide.
The slide took only about 10 min., and looks great. It is really easier than the directions lead you to believe.
Great file gets great results.(02/01/2013)
Use these files for checkering or cutting gooves. Used with the right tools or practice and experiance you will get great results. Very durable and do what they are entended to do. Dont be fooled because it is not a known file maker. Brownells is the only name you need to know and i have never used a brownells stamped product that wasnt as good or better then other brand names.
An Excellent Swiss made file(03/04/2012)
I bought this to try my hand at checkering the front strap of my 1911's grip. I have man years experience at working metal, but never tried checkering before. It come out great. The tool is outstanding. Very hard and precisly cut steel. Makes the cuts very quickly. When I was done it seemed as sharp as when it was new. So I'll get many many projects from it. I was very glad I got it.
Perfect for checkering(02/01/2013)
These files work great for checkering anything you want to checker. Used with the right tools or just experiance and takeing your time you can get great results. If you use without guides be sure to take your time. Last thing you want is your custom pistol ending up with les then straight checkering. Very durable but buy a handle or make one to save your hands.
File to brittle (28/10/2017)
I bought this file to use for checkering 1911s and on the very first frame as soon as I started making my initial cuts it started dropping teeth. You could hear them just breaking off. The file brand is a good brand as I stopped using this file to use a 30 year old file from the same company that is not missing one tooth. So either the quality has gone down or this batch was over hardened creating a brittle file. I will be contacting Brownells for a replacement, hoping this doesnt happen again.
Brownell's steps up(12/04/2018)
I've purchased a number of these files over the years and have checkered more 1911 front straps than I care to count. Never had this issue before. The last file I purchased sat in the tool box for a couple of years before I needed it. When I started using the new file, Like Brett, the teeth started breaking off on every stroke. I looked for my purchase invoice but couldn't locate it. Called Brownell's and they found the invoice for me and replaced the file without question. They are great folks to deal with. The file gets 3 star but Brownells get's 5. New file works great. May have been a bad batch of heat treat.
