Great Product for use in Gunsafes.(12/09/2010)
This product is a must for storage of firearms in safes, reactivate every week at this time and no rust evident on firearms. Also oil firearms quite regularly but did not want any rust surprises so purchased this product as a safe guard (excuse the pun) The only draw back is the recharging/reactivating time of 8 hours.
Works Great(09/06/2012)
I have used the Remington mini- dehumidifiers for about seven years without any problems. The key thing is to keep your firearms at the correct temperature and humidity all the time to prevent rust. This product helps do that.
All my gun safes have a built in AC duplex outlet. I keep the correct sized Golden Rod plugged into one outlet and a small inexpensive digital timer in the other. I run a short extension cord to my Remington dehumidifier and based on the size of the safe and the local humidity I set the timer to go on 1 to 2 hours every other day. This keeps the Remington dehumidifier always at full charge and BLUE to absorb moisture. This set up helps keep the humidity and temperature at a constant and acceptable level to prevent rust.
For my more expensive collectable firearms I use the same process above but monitor the inside safe temperature and humidity with an inexpensive indoor/outdoor wireless temperature and humidity monitor. The cost of the timer and T/H monitor are far less than the decreased value of an expensive collectable firearm that has developed a rust pit or rust pitting. However, keep in mind that this system does not permit one to avoid on going maintenance required to keep your firearms in excellent condition. I still use Brownell's cleaning and oil products for all my firearms on a regular basis and just worry less about humidity and rust.
Works pretty darn well,few complaints(08/09/2013)
Overall these work really well. Few details that bother me: 1.It takes at a minimum of 12 hours to recharge.Directions say 10-12 hours, but anything less than 12 hours and there is condensation still showing in the sight window, and the silica is still various colors. 2.Silica gel beads are various sizes, shapes from very tiny to rather large, some appear to be fragments and particle dust in sight window. 3.Have also noted that some of the silica gel has become cloudy baby blue color after recharging.Has never returned to the dark royal blue as they came, with only two drying cycles. 4.Its also darn hard to see the actual color of the silica gel once it starts changing from blue. The purple and pink are so close together its hard to tell what the condition is.Certainly not obvious. Wish they would start using the orange to green silica gel as its easier to spot at a glance when wet. Otherwise, these units have managed to keep humidity in the safe at least 3% lower than room RH.Really suck up moisture in a safe/locker.Just have to recharge frequently. As a note the Stack-On mini-Dehumidifiers have more consistent and smaller size silica beads. These seem to recharge faster and the color of the silica is much easier to see.The silica also goes back to royal blue with no odd color beads showing.Better quality I think. Otherwise both appear to be identical in construction. The Remington 365's I received this past August from Brownells were made in 2012 and the stack-ons were dated 2013.So maybe its a difference in age/production.
Super Easy and Reusable (22/06/2017)
I suspected that living in FL that the humidity would be a little high, even in A/C, so I used a cigar hygrometer to check the levels. Was shocked to see 65%.
After using the Remington Dehumidifier it was down to 50% or so in about 12hrs, then levels off at about 40% after about 24hrs. They last about 3 months before recharging. Plug em in for about 12-24hrs and they're good 2 go for another few months. No complaints at all.
