great product(08/01/2012)
I've reloaded handgun ammo for many years, but, just started rifle rounds a few years ago. I'm trying to be a precise as possible and follow all the good practices. I have one 204, and all my reloaded cases are ones that I have fired in that one rifle, so, that makes things much simpler. But, I have many .223's and bumping brass to fit a variety of my guns was a challenge. I have tried to measure headspace with several products but it was even hard for me to understand what I was actually trying to measure.
I have several other measurement tools like go/no-go guages, and they have their place, but nothing actually gives you the measurements you need and especially this easy. You can measure, accurately and easily, factory ammo, and then once fired brass from each rifle, and then easily set your dies for a case for a specific rifle, or, cases that will fit any of your rifles.
I've not used the bullet seating depth gauge but the headspace part is wonderful.
Almost perfect(03/01/2015)
Once I figured out how to use this tool, it has become indispensable. I do have a bit of a problem getting tool set properly to measure the distance to the lands...there seems to be a fine line between tightening the set screw enough that the extractor will grab it and tightening it too much so it is really jammed into the lands. It's necessarily small size makes it hard to grip when tightening the screw. But once its set and you are getting repeatable measurements you have a reference point for the touching-the-lands seating depth for a particular bullet. Every cartridge I load goes into this tool to check the seating depth. And every case that goes into my FL sizing die goes into this tool to double check my shoulder bump. I would not be without it!
Headspace mic(24/09/2014)
I only want this for headspace. If I could buy this tool for that function alone I would. I do OAL measurements with my Hornady OAL Gauge/Comparator but this RCBS mic does the headspace measurement and I'm giving it 5 stars just for that function.
Took some fiddling(30/11/2014)
The freebore tool would not work on my Savage Model 12 until I polished the extractor ramp and the back bevel on the rim of the tool itself to get rid of the oxide coating and sharp edges. Once the extractor would engage without collapsing the tool first it was spot on. So you could argue that it helped me to improve my rifle :).
The micrometers are great, and I find them much easier to use than calipers and gage bushings.
Excellent tool(03/12/2016)
The neck gauge for proper head space is easy to use and is the finest I have found. Now the complaint, I wish they carried it in 25-06.
Partial functionality(04/06/2015)
I recently purchased this item to determine headspace and to identify distance to the lands for load development on two rifles (Blaser LRS2 and Tikka T3). The headspace function works as advertised. The ability to identify distance to the lands was a total failure. Neither rifle would extract the tool. RCBS recommends manually hooking the tool under the extractor, but I found this impossible with both rifles. I tried several different methods to determine the distance, but was never able to get consistent readings (could be 0.05 variance).
If you are willing the pay the price for this tool to measure headspace, then go for it. If you expect to use it to determine distance to the lands, you will probably be disappointed.
Based on other reviews, this seems to be a common issue with this tool. I hoped as a mechanical engineer I would be able to get the tool to function, but it didn't happen. My main objective was the headspace measurement, so I may keep it, but it is a fairly expensive tool for only this purpose.
I have not had the chance to make up any loads yet, so I can't assess any other characteristics.
