Perfectly mates with PT1911 (09/04/2011)

Bought this extractor from Brownells to replace original on my Taurus PT1911 that got broke last week, although had no experience of changing, fitting n tuning this part but it took me only 5 minutes to do this replacement, using just my basic screw driver kit.
Tested gun at range and viola... it feeds, extracts from 1st to last round of mag just perfectly and throw empties quite powerfully and very clear off the shooter(even better than the original one).
Really am happy that didn't select anything expensive that could cause me lot of effort adjusting n tuning.

I bought this extractor to upgrade my 1991 colt commander, the stock unit would not hold tension. I fit the extractor following the Wilson combat extractor tuning tips and my results were perfect.

Misleading description (08/06/2012)

Hi,

Nowhere in the product description does it say that this extractor has a bevel, a flat at 45 degrees, cut into the metal on the hook bottom. But it does.

A rounded hook bottom, for reliable feeding, is preferred by many top gunsmiths including Patrick Sweeney, author of Gunsmthing Pistols & Revolvers.

Now, I ordered this extractor because I thought the hook would be left square, with enough material on it for me to round the hook bottom for reliable feeding. But no, this extractor wasn't made to be customized for optimum reliability. It's a drop-in compromise at best.

Another thing, the product description says this extractor is made of carbon steel, also known as spring steel. Irv Stone of legendary Bar-Sto barrels says that the WWII 1911 specifications call for the extractor to be made of spring steel because spring steel resists metal fatigue better than alloy tool steel.

Guess what, the label for this extractor says it's made of 4300 series alloy tool steel.

This extractor may be good enough for some, but it's not what I had in mind for a custom 1911.

Needs more than just a little fitting (21/02/2016)

This extractor has the hook too far forward. The rear profile is also cut at a very strange angle and is difficult to blend into the rear profile of the slide. There are better products out there for the price.
