Nothing fancy, it gets the job done.
Will NOT fit Bull Barrels(09/11/2009)
In case you are new to the AR platform or new to working on them, as I was, you need to know that this wrench will not fit bull barrels to wrench the barrel nut. The lugs are in the right spot, but the cut-out is not bug enough to go around the width of the barrel itself. Since this is the reason I bought the wrench, I can't offer an evaluation on the rest of it. I know there are other combination wrenchs that will work, so I'd have to recommend something else.
Don't waste your money.(02/04/2010)
One of three pins snapped with little pressure applied making tool useless for barrel removal. Poor quality steel.Might have been made in China. UNfortunately I had it for a few months before my first use, so can't return it. Surprised at lack of quality for a Brownells product, but it is becoming more problematic these days with Brownells.
Would not buy again(12/04/2010)
This thing looks rock solid, but in my opinion the pins are too short to ever turn a barrel nut, especially an aftermarket one. If you are installing a Larue freefloat rail, DO NOT BUY. The threaded ring gets in the way and this wrench will just damage the barrel nut.
Very Strong and Proper Fit, But...(22/08/2010)
I used this tool to remove the factory barrel nut on a standard M-4 platform AR. I had some difficulty with the nut because it was on the rifle through many heat cycles. Some of the prongs actually broke off the nut before I got it loose, but the prongs on the wrench stayed in tact. I could see, however, where some applications would call for the prongs to be longer. This tool worked great for me on this project, but others may have to consider something different.
Does the job(09/11/2010)
Remember that this a reproduction of a military/factory wrench. I think this item is getting a bad rap since the reviews are for applications that are not using mil-spec or factory add ons. It definitely gets the job done with the mil-spec parts.
I liked it.(01/01/2011)
I bought one of these a few years ago, and in the meantime, I've used it to put together and take off barrel nuts about a dozen times. Only time it failed to do what it was supposed to do is when I tried to remove a barrel nut that another wrench had stripped out when it broke. It couldn't get enough purchase on what was left of the teeth to turn it, but that's not this wrenches fault, though the PRI wrench might've. But I've used this with a torque wrench to tighten, a breaker bar to loosen, and once even a hammer. It certainly didn't seem fragile at any point while I was using it. The only issue I've ever had with it is once, using it to check a muzzle brake for permanance, I did manage to slightly round the edges of the flats on the brake, but I don't believe that there's any spanner wrench that wouldn't have at that point.
Works Great(05/04/2011)
I put 70 foot pounds of torque on this when tightening a barrel nut and it performed great. Heavy tool that works exactly how it is supposed to.
Great wrench...solid tool!(21/12/2011)
Just installed a free float handguard on my BCM. Used this tool to break the old barrel nut free and torque the new one. It worked great! I had to use a mini sledge and three hits to bust the old nut free...no problem. Torqued the new one to approx 50 foot pounds (to line up gas tube hole). Performed flawlessly. Worked well on the flash hider as well.
A good tool to have(16/07/2012)
I bought the combination wrench to change out a muzzle device, and it worked great. I did not even need to torque the wrench that hard to loosen and tighten muzzle devices. This tool also has a great combination of other uses and is made of thick steel.
The Correct tool, compared to all else(24/07/2012)
This is how a barrel nut is supposed to be made. The description is clear, as stated this is a copy of milspec wrench. i am a US Navy Armorer, and it looks identical to my tools. i doing any standard profile barrels, 20" 16" 14.5" 10.5" quality barrels with a standard designed barrel nut. buy it. dont wast money on the huge long does everything wrench's, i have seen truly dozens break.
excellent for most small nut application(02/12/2012)
this wrench works great with standard barrel nuts. The interior dimensions do not allow its use to install the JP enterprises barrel nut on the jphg-1d, however, due to smaller radius of the space designed to fit around barrel. I had to buy the DPMS model to use with this handguard's barrel nut. Still, I use it and abuse it in every other application and it is strong and easy to use. It is the strength of the design that makes the inside radius small.
Might need adjusting(07/04/2018)
Solid and nice construction. The three posts for the barrel nut are strong and well built... but would not fit into a BAR barrel nut by Areo Precision. The posts were .02" too wide. After clamping it into my vise and a little work with a dremel tool it works fine. I don't think the little amount taken off will effect the integrity of the tool. Overall it is a nice tool worth the money.
