function over looks(23/04/2011)
It's works well for any application, but I find it's a bit bulky on the side of your gun. Personally I think I'm going to pay the extra dollar and buy a different one with a lower profile offered from Mesa Tactical.
Great product(22/10/2009)
-It does exactly what it's supposed to -It's very easy to install No complaints
Works great(08/11/2009)
I don't know how they can sell the higher priced ones out there when this one works so well.
Securely holds shells and mounted up to my 1100 with no problems.
Its not great, but ok.(14/03/2012)
I use this in a law enforcement capacity. Be sure not to over tighten the trigger screws or they well strip the base plate. Also, Loctite all of the screws, even the ones holding the plastic shell holder to the base plate.
This is the one!(13/11/2012)
Used on all my departments shotguns (870's) and they get treated BAD and have lasted YEARS. 'nuff said! Fours stars only because they're not made out of GOLD!! :)
Perfect except for......(09/01/2013)
Everything as advertised. Only problem is me being left handed so will have to do a little Dremel work on the bottom rear corner to clear trigger finger.
Good but not great(03/10/2013)
Doesn't work with 2 different forends I tried. Using the ATI Talon it needs to be about about 1/2 to 3/4" further backwards, the shell holder prevents it fully travelling so won't load shells. Make sure your forend will work with this.
Works just as advertised.(20/07/2015)
I easily installed this shell holder on my 8 shot R870. I had the 'stock' sporter forend which was too long and replaced it with the, shorter, speedfeed 'police' forend. Also found here. The shells are really snug and secure. Very satisfied. The one that shipped to me did not have a window to see the serial number, contrary to the description.
Tacstar Mossberg 590 Sidesaddle(13/02/2015)
I bought this item but noticed soon after upon installing the front screw I was provided was wrong. The screw was too short, narrow and threads were incorrect. Also top of the screw is too thick, so it would interfere with the bolt.
Now I need to go to store and find proper screw for it. I do not recommend to buy this product.
Extra ammo right at hand(19/11/2009)
Sturdy and rugged enough (given it's made of thick strong plastic). Holds the 6 shells securely and keeps them handy right on the side of the shotgun. Installation was pretty easy.
Its a Must!(29/01/2010)
Very easy to install, i don't know why i didn't get this before. very handy.
EXCELLENT FOR LAW ENFORCEMENT/HOME DEFSN(13/04/2010)
EASY TO INSTALL (AS LONG AS YOU KNOW HOW TO TAKE YOUR MOSSBERG 500 APART). VERY STURDY AND EXCELLENT PLACEMENT FOR TACTICAL RELOADS. I JUST WISH THEY MADE ONE THAT HAD A RAIL THAT COVERS THE RECIEVER TO ADD A RED DOT. BUT OVERALL EXCELLENT PRODUCT. COMES WITH ALL THE TOOLS NEEDED TO INSTALL.
Good accessory.(15/10/2010)
I purchased this side saddle for use on a Maverick Model 88 12 gauge. My intent was to make a short light home defense shotgun. I chose the Maverick because it was inexpensive, serviceable, adequate, and available. Because the Maverick comes with a "field" forend, I had to modify it to work properly with the side saddle. A few minutes with a Dremel tool solved the problem. Installation was quick and easy. I did use Loctite on all threaded screws. I'm pleaded with the product.
Absolute Garbage, Do Not Buy!(17/11/2010)
Installed this side-saddle on my Maverick 88, which has several Mossberg 500 parts (Mossy barrel, heat shield, forend tube assy/forend). I used red LOCTITE on every screw. The plastic shell holding fixture has held to the aluminum mounting plate just fine. I have maybe 200-300 rounds through this shotgun since it has been installed about 2 years ago.
I recently attended a 3-gun shoot and the shotgun performed well. None of my weapons had any malfunctions, and I was happy. However, after inspecting the shotgun for cleaning after the shoot, I noticed the elongated ejector screw that replaces the stock one to secure the mounting plate to the weapon had come loose. I took the screw out, cleaned it, replaced the LOCTITE and screwed it back in tightly. The side-saddle was still loose.
It turns out the threads had totally stripped out, there's not even enough material there to re-tap the hole, without enlarging the hole in the side of the receiver. I would not buy this for any shotgun you plan to use for defense or competitive use. It's a piece of junk, and personally I'll be giving the Vang Comp or Mesa Tactical side ammo carrier a shot.
Looks good, performs horrible(13/12/2010)
The aluminum backing plate is not thick enough to get enough threads to hold the mounting screws. After one trip to the range the screws had pulled out the threads and it was worthless. Do not buy!
Excellent! one Flaw.(10/01/2014)
This product is excellent, however the center mounting screws for the ally plate were drilled slightly slanted, however still holds tight! Holds the rounds snugly and lets loose when needed.
Very useful addition(14/01/2014)
At the price point, I don't think there is any competition in the market. Some folks have complained about the attachment point durability, and the complaints are in part valid. The nut could be almost twice as thick as it is for the front screw, and therefore could have lots more threads, and would still fit in the countersink of the back plate. However, if one will simply put a drop of Loctite 290 (green, wicking) on the nut after tightening, these seem to hold up fine. However, I don't think this piece was ever intended for high-round-count use like 3-gun competition. If that is your gig, then you might be better off with the (much more expensive) Hans Vang unit. I have these on three 590-A1s and an 870, and have only had problems with one. That one was my fault, for stripping the threads on the nut after removing and replaciong it several times during unrelated gunsmithing operations.
BEWARE -- COMPLETE JUNK(01/05/2013)
Winchester 1200 application -- on the 5th shot -- the TacStar sidesaddle snapped where the plastic "ring" surrounds the receiver mounting screw. The entire shell holder whipped 180 degrees and hit me in the forehead -- HARD!
Fortunately, no damage was done, either to me or the Winchester -- but this piece is COMPLETE JUNK and should be avoided at all costs. It's cheap, yes -- but you get what you pay for. Go ALL METAL if you need a sidesaddle. I suspect the "design" is basically the same for all makes/models of shotguns, i.e. Remington, etc.
