Good Product(29/11/2010)
I installed this on an Airweight J-Frame S&W 637 to prevent light strikes. I was initially concerned that it might cause punctured primers due to the added length. However, upon testing it with several different factory cartridges (standard and +P), I found no sign of excessive primer damage. Actually, the design of this product is quite smart... the pin may be a bit longer, but the tip is more blunt than the pointed stock pin. The added surface area and extra length make a nice, smooth, wide dent that ignites primers with gusto. Just make sure you test it thoroughly as results might vary from one gun to the next.
Came up short.(28/04/2012)
0.018" shorter than the stock FP in my N frame.
Standard Length(11/05/2012)
Same length as stock K-frame firing pin.
Good Trigger Job Accessory(27/10/2012)
I put this in a S&W Governor, The OAL is about the same as the factory FP but, the actual FP Protrusion was .011 greater than the factory FP, and that is what matters. I used a Wilson Combat Spring Kit and this thing to do the job and it turned out nice. FP Protrusion is measured form the breech/bolt face to the tip of the FP with a FP Protrusion Gauge and a Micrometer, not by measuring the OAL.
A must for Federal Primers & Trigger Job(04/01/2014)
I have these in all my S&W Revolvers.
The extra length is in the travel, not the length of the pin. Look at the groove in the body (thick part) of the pin. That's where the extra travel is provided.
Be careful not to loose and be sure to re-install the spring that already exist in your revolver.
A good trigger job with a 6# double action pull will require this and Federal primers for reliable ignition.
fixed problem(15/01/2014)
had problem with misfire, my revolver has to big of gap between cylinder and frame (like somebody tried to make it work with moon clips) dropped firing pin in, cleared problem right up
Flawless Ignition with 202 Spring Kit...(21/03/2014)
I recently upgraded a stock 629-6 using a Brownells 202 Spring Kit(standard rate Power Rib Main Spring with 13, 14, and 15 lbs Trigger Rebound Springs). I replaced the stock Main Spring & Trigger Rebound Spring with the kit's standard rate Power Rib Main Spring and the 15lbs Trigger Rebound Spring. This resulted in greatly improved reasonably light & smooth SA/DA pulls but as is often the case with lighter than stock aftermarket spring upgrades, I could not get 100% reliable ignition with a variety of primer makes & types. As component availability is now so hit & miss, for me it is absolutely crucial that this handgun be able to shoot loads using whatever type of primers are available with 100% reliability. Replacing the stock firing pin with the C&S Extra Long S&W Firing Pin from Brownells instantly solved the issue. After swapping out the stock firing pin I achieved 100% reliable ignition with loads using the several makes & types of primers I have stocked up on as they became available, including the Large Pistol Magnum primer that is so notoriously hard to ignite. As others have pointed out the pin itself is not longer but the travel cut is wider which allows the pin to travel forward a shade more. That little bit more inertia combined with the face of the pin being more rounded & wider than a stock S&W pin yielded flawless ignition across the board. Fit was perfect & finish excellent resulting in easy drop-in installation. I could not be happier with this firing pin and highly recommend that if you are going to install an aftermarket spring kit in a S&W revolver, you swap out the stock firing pin for this one at the same time. It will save you a ton of frustration. Once more a great product from Brownells. Thanks!
It worked fine --- for AWHILE.(02/07/2014)
I teach tons of CCW classes and I have my students shoot a Sig Mosquito and a S&W 617. The 617 started having misfires after about 20K rounds and it looked like the firing pin was not hitting the 22 rims very hard so I bought this long pin. The misfiring was cured but the firing pin broke after about 5000 rounds. I installed another one. We'll see what happens.
Poor Product(07/01/2017)
Does not work even with full power mainspring had misfires
Doesn't last long(29/01/2018)
Works well. Ran them in my 4 competition S&W's. Had one break in my Life frame, fortunately not during a match. Read that this is a common problem. Pulled them all out and went with Apex.
I would not recommend, because there is a better product.
